How scores work
What Snowpace can't see
The things that decide a day that no weather forecast knows.
Snowpace scores the weather. Several things that make or break a day aren't in any forecast:
- Whether it's open. Hours, lifts and trails are only known to the operator, and only sold through commercial feeds. Where the listing has one, each place links to its own web site: check it before you go.
- Grooming. No public data says when a trail was last groomed.
- Snowmaking. The snowpack comes from a weather model that doesn't know about it, so a hill making snow can show as bare. See Snowpack.
- Avalanche conditions. Check the avalanche forecast for the area.
- Your exact spot. The forecast is for the area's location: for downhill, the average of base and summit; for nordic, mid elevation. A big area varies with height, aspect and shelter.
- What actually happened. A score is a forecast, not a report. Each place shows how old its forecast is.
Distances are straight lines from where you are, not driving routes, and Snowpace never estimates drive times.
